The Table Doesn’t Lie

The following article has been written by one of our Trust members.  They are the opinions of that person and not necessarily those of Blues Trust.  Would you like to contribute a discussion point of your own about Birmingham City Football Club?  If so, we would be delighted to hear from you.

For many, many seasons I, as a longstanding and often battered Blues supporter, have been told that the league table doesn’t lie. This, more often than not, when I have tried to substantiate that my team has been better than the table portrays them. Most of my fellow B9 supporters will get the drift.

However, and it is a massive however, this time I really can agree that the League One table doesn’t lie after Saturday’s result at Cambridge United brought the curtain down on a quite remarkable season. Staring for much longer than I have ever stared at a league table, and the incredible sight of 111 points amassed, not only lifted my spirits but made my soul swell with pride.

Relegation a year ago has been replaced by total joy. Our owners have rectified the damage of that time just as they promised they would. But who would have predicted a turnaround on such a scale? Blues are a different commodity now and it’s fair to say that the footballing world is taking notice.

Listening to Chris Davies last summer, and his initial interview upon becoming our new manager, really hits home now. At the time he made it crystal clear that he wanted to work with the right staff and players. He only wanted success with the people who, in addition to their footballing abilities, had the right attitude and character to reach his own high standards.

Success over a long and arduous season is only achieved by meeting each and every match head on and grinding out results with genuine focus, preparation and workmanlike attitudes. Not occasionally, but every time. And let’s not forget that Blues have had 60 such challenges this season. This record achievement has undoubtedly put the club on the footballing map, with the 111 points widely spoken about as an achievement that is unlikely to be equalled in the future.

During the next few days I will keep looking at the table just to confirm that the 111 record points is real, and then try to get back to normal life. However, on second thoughts, it might take a bit longer. Enjoy the moment.

Same here. Blues are on the up.
Will settle for top six next season.

A remarkable season for sure. Wonderful achievement. Well done Chris Davies and everyone else involved. But football is a funny old game. How ironic that one of only three league defeats was at the hands of the team that finished bottom of the division? How did that happen….? ????????‍♂️ But we move on. I’m already enjoying all the transfer speculation and looking forward with real optimism to next season!
