St. Andrew’s Fortress
What a great home record we’ve had this season.
The last time we were undefeated was in 1971/72 when we gained promotion back to the top flight. In those days I was a terrace season ticket holder standing with the ‘regulars’ half way up The Kop, opposite the old players tunnel as myself and one of my late brothers had done for several seasons.
We never looked like losing at St. Andrews all season, and although not in attendance in person these days I perceived that feeling was there amongst the faithful this season.
I didn’t miss a home game in 1971/72 and still have all the match day programmes for that year among my collection of about 550 Blues programmes in total. They bring back great memories.
Great memories have also been forged this season. The record points tally and events last Sunday when the League One trophy was presented after the match against Mansfield Town emphasised that perhaps, at last, we do indeed have owners who have the commercial ability to really launch the club into the big time.
Having read his recent article in The Times, it’s apparent that Tom Wagner is a man of considerable ability coupled with a determination to see the job through. He will Keep Right On !
I always look forward to the next season but this year it’s coupled with real optimism. More power to your elbow Tom.

Nice thoughts Bill about the past and you are right- there are good times ahead. Tom Wagner is a genuine saviour for our club and it comes after an emotional plea by WM’s Richard Wilford immediately after the Paul Caddis equaliser against Bolton that we needed a proper guardian for a well supported football club. Tom eventually arrived! and it was worth the many years wait.
Going back to the ‘Caddis’ game ….it seems to have gone unnoticed but unless I’m mistaken Jukey had scored Bolton;s second goal ….so he provided us with some excitement even before he signed for us….
You are absolutely correct Bill, Jukey did score to make it 2-0 for Bolton. Memories of that wonderful come back with the last gasp equaliser for us will never be forgotten. Watching Lee Clark celebrate was pure ‘Blues’ and with zero money to spend. Prior to our first class owners we now have- Gary Monk and Lee Clark kept us afloat in the Championship with more than one arm behind their backs. They might not have achieved much since leaving B9 but whilst here they had that magical blue blood that this club injects into us all. Crazy but true!
